Optical Fibre networks

CBC conducts extensive research in optical fiber communication, focusing on enhancing bandwidth, reducing latency, improving signal integrity, and extending network reach. Keys areas include advanced modulation techniques, PON and WDM networks, radio over fibre technologies, ultra-stable time and frequency reference signals, 5G technologies and underwater communication.

Fiber-Optic Sensing

At the Centre for Broadband Communication (CBC), we are advancing fiber-optic sensing technologies by leveraging the physics of light propagation in optical fibres. Our research focuses on techniques like Optical Time Domain Reflectometry (OTDR), Frequency Domain Reflectometry (OFDR), surface plasmonic resonance (SPR), interferometry and Fiber Bragg Gratings, to develop highly sensitive and precise sensors. These innovations are applied in environmental monitoring, structural health monitoring, and water quality assessment, providing real-time, reliable data for critical decision-making.

Innovations in Optical Fibre Solutions

The CBC 3D Printing Hub: combines advanced CAD design, cutting-edge 3D printing and optical fibre to transform ideas into reality, specializing in custom prototypes and functional components. A notable project is the development of Compact Optical Fibre Delay Lines (OFDLs), which are compact, customizable, and optimised for minimal signal loss, revolutionizing applications like network sensing, signal synchronisation, and radar calibration. Through innovation and strategic partnerships, the hub continues to push the boundaries of technology, demonstrating excellence in craftsmanship and creativity.

Fibre-SensX: Fiber-SensX is a robust optic fibre monitoring sensor designed to transform early warning systems in high-risk environments. Designed to enhance safety and risk management, this innovative solution provides useful real-time data to mitigate geohazards, such as catastrophic mining tailings dam failures and sinkholes in vulnerable regions. Fiber-SensX sets a new benchmark for safety, reliability, and innovation in critical infrastructure and geologically sensitive areas.
